President's Pratterings - 5th February:
Hello everyone. I guess it is a bit late to be wishing you all a Happy New Year, but I hope 2012 has started off well.
I know from reading the Monday's ODT that Caversham has been represented by quite a few athletes at the Caledonian Ground and all are performing well. Daniel Balchin has been running as well as ever and was just pipped by the narrowest of margins in one of the closest 10,000 metre races seen at the Caledonian for 40 years. Bevan Stevens, Tony Payne, Peter Meffen and Lyndon Brown's names have also been showing up in the results. Tony won the "short" race in the Otago Peninsula Challenge.
We have also been fortunate in having joined us for a few months, Jordan Maynard, an exchange student from Canada. Jordan finished second in the Ness Cup mile race and was promoted to first but was then found to be not registered. He has been training with our guys since he arrived in Dunedin.
Claire Giles and Alison Newall have been doing their thing and competing in just about every event on the programme. As have new members, Andrew and Zinzan Smith who in fact was turned away from one event a few Saturdays ago as he had already competed in the limit for someone of his age. Julie Edmunds has been a regular competitor in walking races and has been getting training advice which is resulting in her times coming down quite remarkably.
Kieran Columb has been putting a lot of effort into organizing regular walks on Saturdays including an interesting one on the Rail Trail last week. I am not sure how many members turned up for that walk but a fortnight before he was accompanied by 21 other walkers. I am guilty of not turning out but I would encourage members to support Kieran as he goes to a lot of trouble to arrange these.
We recently had a burglary at the clubrooms and the thieves broke in through the rear roller door to then smash into the little lockup room to steal about 40 bottles of beer. It is the first break-in since the clubrooms were opened in 1970 so we have been lucky. Police took a number of finger prints and are investigating.
Well, I will try to get back into the mode and get some news out to you on a regular basis. In the meantime keep up with the exercising and enjoy your summer.
